War c<strong>an</strong>not create <strong>an</strong>y real cleavage or division between the people who arefighting <strong>with</strong> each other. <strong>The</strong> people <strong>of</strong> the warring countries seem to be different merely by virtue<strong>of</strong> having different bodies <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> minds; but from the point <strong>of</strong> view <strong>of</strong> their souls, all differences arenot only secondary but false. From the point <strong>of</strong> view <strong>of</strong> ultimate reality, it remains true that no soulis really at war <strong>with</strong> <strong>an</strong>y other soul."In the hour <strong>of</strong> trial, let the thought <strong>of</strong> everyone be not for the limited self, but for others - not forthe claims <strong>of</strong> the ego-life, but for the claims <strong>of</strong> the Divine Self which is equally in all. It is amistake to ignore hum<strong>an</strong> suffering as merely a part <strong>of</strong> the illusory universe. Not by ignoring hum<strong>an</strong>suffering, but by treating it <strong>with</strong> Creative Love, is the Gateway opened for <strong>Life</strong> Eternal; <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> notthrough callous indifference, but through active <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> selfless service, is secured the attainment <strong>of</strong>that tr<strong>an</strong>scendental <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> illimitable Truth, which is at the heart <strong>of</strong> the illusory universe."Hum<strong>an</strong>ity has to emerge out <strong>of</strong> this dreadful war <strong>with</strong> spiritual integrity, <strong>with</strong> hearts free from thepoison <strong>of</strong> malice or revenge, <strong>with</strong> minds disburdened <strong>of</strong> the blows given or received, <strong>with</strong> soulsunscathed by suffering <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> filled <strong>with</strong> the spirit <strong>of</strong> unconditional surrender to the Divine Will. Inspite <strong>of</strong> its attend<strong>an</strong>t evils, this war plays its part in my mission <strong>of</strong> helping hum<strong>an</strong>iyy to fulfil thedivine pl<strong>an</strong> on earth <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> to inherit the coming era <strong>of</strong> truth <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> love, <strong>of</strong> peace <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> universalbrotherhood, <strong>of</strong> spiritual underst<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ing <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> unbounded creativity."He gave the following explicit instructions to all disciples:"<strong>The</strong>y should be above party politics <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> should bear malice <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> ill-will towards none."<strong>The</strong>y should observe all the precautionary measures <strong>of</strong> war for civil population enforced by theGovernment <strong>of</strong> the day."<strong>The</strong>y should continue as usual to discharge their special duties <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> work for my spiritual causeunless otherwise directed by me."<strong>The</strong>y should stick to their posts <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> appointments <strong>an</strong>ywhere in India, under <strong>an</strong>y circumst<strong>an</strong>ces,unless ordered by the Government."<strong>The</strong>y may undertake hum<strong>an</strong>itari<strong>an</strong> <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> relief work <strong>of</strong> a nonsectari<strong>an</strong> character, <strong>with</strong>outidentifying themselves <strong>with</strong> <strong>an</strong>y party or political org<strong>an</strong>ization, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> strictly <strong>with</strong>in the scope <strong>of</strong>time <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> leisure left over after the perform<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> spiritual duties enjoined by me."<strong>The</strong>y should extend spiritual solace <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> comfort to the people <strong>with</strong>in
