<strong>THE</strong> NEW LIFE 173<strong>The</strong> m<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ali were then asked to recite audibly the passages from the Avesta, Bible, Qur<strong>an</strong><strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Bhagavad gita. <strong>Baba</strong> said that he first <strong>of</strong> all w<strong>an</strong>ted to invoke the forgiveness <strong>of</strong> God forhimself, for the m<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ali <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> for all through the Zoroastri<strong>an</strong>, Hindu, Christi<strong>an</strong> <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Islamicapproaches to God. At the end <strong>of</strong> the recitations <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> referring to Khak's qiraat (melodiousrecitation <strong>of</strong> Qur<strong>an</strong>), <strong>Baba</strong> remarked that if God c<strong>an</strong>not be moved <strong>with</strong> such words, he mustbe either deaf or dead. <strong>Baba</strong> also said that this was the last ceremony: 'Henceforth there willbe no ceremonies at all'.Ramju was asked to give a brief narration for the benefit <strong>of</strong> the visitors about the pl<strong>an</strong>s <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>arr<strong>an</strong>gements being made to wind up everything to start the New <strong>Life</strong>. After that Don read outrapidly the conditions in English <strong>with</strong> a few interjections from <strong>Baba</strong> emphasizing the mainsignific<strong>an</strong>ce <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> implications involved. <strong>Baba</strong> then dec1ared that after taking the oath a copy<strong>of</strong> the conditions would be given to everyone, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> that each should study the contentsthoroughly <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> return the respective copies <strong>with</strong>in 4 hours <strong>with</strong> <strong>an</strong> unequivocal <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> plain 'Yes'or 'No'.<strong>The</strong> text <strong>of</strong> <strong>Baba</strong>'s last oath was then read out solemnly by Donkin at a signal from <strong>Baba</strong>.<strong>Baba</strong> rose for the first time from his seat <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> remained st<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ing for a while facing the wall infront <strong>of</strong> the scriptures <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>with</strong> his back to the m<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ali. <strong>The</strong> oath was as follows:"Before God, the Absolute, whom those who have realized know as their own Self <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>whom believers believe to be All-pervading, All-knowing, All-powerful, All-loving <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Allmerciful- before this Infinite Existence, <strong>Baba</strong>, on behalf <strong>of</strong> himself <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> his followers, asksforgiveness for all mental, physical <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> moral weaknesses called sins, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> for all lies <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>false dealings, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> for all impure <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> selfish actions."Before this Infinite God who ever was, ever is, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> ever will be, <strong>Baba</strong> decides today on theNew <strong>Life</strong> that he <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> those who accomp<strong>an</strong>y him will enter from 16 October 1949, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> lead ontill the end. This New <strong>Life</strong> will be based absolutely on all that has been dictated by <strong>Baba</strong> inthe circular <strong>of</strong> conditions; <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>Baba</strong> invokes God to make him st<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> by it as firmly <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>steadfastly as his comp<strong>an</strong>ions in his New <strong>Life</strong> are required to do."After that, <strong>Baba</strong> once again warned them all that his decision <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> the decisions that otherswould arrive at that day were irrevocable <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> binding for all time: he then had the followingread out:"I forgive each <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> every disciple, devotee, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> follower, all his
