Norina was waiting at<strong>Baba</strong>'s house, for she had been unable to travel owing to a heart condition which haddeveloped the month before. <strong>Baba</strong> embraced her <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> said how much he liked the house, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>the view <strong>of</strong> the lake <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> oce<strong>an</strong>.As usual he allocated the accommodation in the various cabins <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> houses for those stayingat the centre. He also regulated the meals, which at first were vegetari<strong>an</strong>; but he stated, 'Iallow vegetari<strong>an</strong>s to follow their own diet <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> non-vegetari<strong>an</strong>s to eat meat; I do not interfere<strong>with</strong> <strong>an</strong>y custom or religion. When faced <strong>with</strong> love for God these matters have no value. Lovefor God is self-denial, mental control, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> ego <strong>an</strong>nihilation.' Fr<strong>an</strong>cis Brabazon came fromAustralia, expecting to return <strong>with</strong> <strong>Baba</strong> to India, but <strong>Baba</strong> saw him for two days, then senthim home.<strong>Baba</strong> usually rose at 5 a.m. <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> walked to the central dining-room by 7 a.m., not eating butpaying attention to all present. <strong>The</strong>n <strong>with</strong> the women he would go for a walk along the lakepath to the oce<strong>an</strong>. <strong>The</strong>reafter he went into seclusion. After the first phase he started to giveinterviews in the morning from 9.30 onwards, which would continue into the afternoon. Hewould play games, there was boating on the lake, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> in the evening they gathered at theguest house for readings <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> stories. <strong>Baba</strong> made a point <strong>of</strong> getting as m<strong>an</strong>y as possible to giveaccounts <strong>of</strong> the saints. He would leave ear1y <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> walk back to his house. Everyone had to bepresent <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> available all day. <strong>The</strong>re was one open day, when people came from m<strong>an</strong>y parts<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>Baba</strong> met them individually or in small groups in the bam. One <strong>of</strong> his remarks was, 'Bringme lovers <strong>of</strong> God <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> I will bow down to them. Otherwise I shall bow down to myself.' Hetold Elizabeth that the centre was to be devoted to the following purposes: a spiritualacademy; a house <strong>of</strong> adv<strong>an</strong>ced souls; <strong>an</strong> abode <strong>of</strong> the saints; a 'mad' institute; as solitaryquarters for meditation; a resting place for the afflicted.On 20 May <strong>Baba</strong> sent some <strong>of</strong> the m<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ali ahead to make arr<strong>an</strong>gements for his arrival at<strong>Meher</strong> Mount, Ojai, California, where he was to stay. He followed, <strong>with</strong> the rest <strong>of</strong> those whowere to go <strong>with</strong> him, the next day, in two cars. <strong>Meher</strong> Mount is a small estate, a lovely <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>secluded spot. But they were never to reach their destination.Before they left, <strong>Baba</strong> asked Elizabeth Patterson, in whose car he was to travel, <strong>with</strong> <strong>Meher</strong>a,M<strong>an</strong>i <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Mehru, if she had her car insur<strong>an</strong>ce policy <strong>with</strong> her.
