Part II Chapter 5<strong>THE</strong> TEACHING'I am not a teacher'(1)From the beginning <strong>Meher</strong> <strong>Baba</strong> has declared that he is not a teacher. In <strong>an</strong>swer to a question in 1932, hesaid:"My work is to lead others to reach the goal: to live in the world <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> not to be <strong>of</strong> it, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> to be in harmony<strong>with</strong> everything <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> everyone."He does this by silence <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> not-writing. <strong>The</strong>se str<strong>an</strong>ge methods challenge normal life; not that others, too,should cease to speak <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> write, but that they should ask themselves questions. <strong>Baba</strong>'s sister M<strong>an</strong>i tells <strong>of</strong> avisitor who came to him <strong>with</strong> a long list <strong>of</strong> questions, but sitting <strong>with</strong> him the questions were forgotten. Onhis leaving, <strong>Baba</strong> said:"<strong>The</strong>re is only one question. And, once you know the <strong>an</strong>swer to that question, there will be no morequestions. In fact, there are not two questions."<strong>The</strong>re is the one Original Question, to which there is one Final Answer. In between the original Question<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> the final Answer there are innumerable false <strong>an</strong>swers."From out <strong>of</strong> the depth <strong>of</strong> unbroken Infinity arose the Question, 'Who am I?' And to that Question there isthe <strong>an</strong>swer, 'I am God!'"<strong>Baba</strong> is not a teacher, because there is teaching enough already. Yet he does teach because the mind hasto be addressed <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> awakened as well as the heart. That is the expl<strong>an</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> the great amount <strong>of</strong> teaching bythis non-teacher, though he does not cease to point out that it is the less import<strong>an</strong>t thing.
