50 <strong>THE</strong> <strong>GOD</strong>-<strong>MAN</strong>performed by Rustamji. <strong>The</strong> work <strong>of</strong> the hospital was divided among the members <strong>of</strong> them<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ali. During the two years in which the hospital was open, there were nearly seven thous<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>out-patients <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> not less th<strong>an</strong> five hundred in-patients.At the end <strong>of</strong> March the Hazrat <strong>Baba</strong>j<strong>an</strong> school was opened to impart free primary education tothe village boys <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> girls <strong>of</strong> all classes <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> creeds, mostly untouchables. Free boarding <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>clothing were also provided. <strong>The</strong> school started <strong>with</strong> about twenty boys, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> grew to one hundred<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> fifty boys <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> girls. <strong>The</strong> boys' <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> girls' schools were separate. At first the untouchables weretaught apart, but after a few months all were taught together. <strong>The</strong> vernacular Marathi was taughtto the girls, who had a wom<strong>an</strong> teacher; the boys were also taught English.During April <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> May the colony grew continually; the newcomers belonging to all religions.On one occasion <strong>Baba</strong> <strong>with</strong> the school teachers <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> others <strong>of</strong> the m<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ali were washing aboutthirty boys attending the untouchable section <strong>of</strong> the school, a process which took about three <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>a half hours, for they were undeniably filthy. During the bathing some Brahmin visitors came for<strong>Baba</strong>'s blessing, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> as they bowed to him <strong>Baba</strong> said, 'I am bathing untouchable boys. It is no usethus having darsh<strong>an</strong> unless you are prepared to do the work I do.' <strong>The</strong>y felt the force <strong>of</strong> his words,<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> joined <strong>Baba</strong> <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> the others in bathing the boys. This washing <strong>of</strong> untouchable boys wasconst<strong>an</strong>tly done. <strong>Baba</strong> played cricket <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> football <strong>with</strong> the boys <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> made a practice <strong>of</strong> givingpersonal supervision to their feeding <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> general conduct. Bathing was part <strong>of</strong> the daily routine.<strong>The</strong> birthday <strong>of</strong> Upasni Maharaj was celebrated on 10 May. From eight o'clock in themorning crowds <strong>of</strong> people beg<strong>an</strong> to appear from the surrounding villages. <strong>The</strong>y were supplied<strong>with</strong> food, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> throughout the day dramatic recitals, lectures, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> songs, ch<strong>an</strong>ts <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> musicwere provided by devotees <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> others who had come to help <strong>Baba</strong> to entertain the comp<strong>an</strong>y.A special procession <strong>of</strong> untouchables came from Ar<strong>an</strong>gaon. To conclude the festivities therewere fireworks <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>an</strong> open-air film show. <strong>Baba</strong> received some thous<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>s <strong>of</strong> people, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>retired to his hut at 2 a.m. the next day.A darsh<strong>an</strong> was held by <strong>Baba</strong> every Thursday, in which devotees from m<strong>an</strong>y miles aroundpaid their respects in their various ways - the Hindus prostrating themselves at <strong>Baba</strong>'s feet<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> placing their foreheads on his toe, the Muslims kissing his h<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>, others joining theirh<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>s <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> putting them to their foreheads in obeis<strong>an</strong>ce, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> so on. Visitors came from earlymorning until late at night. <strong>The</strong> fasts <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>
