PREFACE__________<strong>The</strong> first part <strong>of</strong> this book is as complete <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> accurate a record as I have been able to make <strong>of</strong> thelife <strong>of</strong> <strong>Meher</strong> <strong>Baba</strong> who calls himself God-M<strong>an</strong>. It is the more import<strong>an</strong>t part <strong>of</strong> the book. <strong>The</strong> secondpart is the more difficult because it is concerned <strong>with</strong> the question, Why? For the reader who comes tothe subject <strong>with</strong>out previous knowledge, I suggest that the first three chapters <strong>of</strong> the second part shouldbe read first.I have taken pains to record <strong>Meher</strong> <strong>Baba</strong>'s movements <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> journeyings in some detail because theyundoubtedly have signific<strong>an</strong>ce, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> m<strong>an</strong>y <strong>of</strong> the 'messages' <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> 'discourses' <strong>of</strong> this silent m<strong>an</strong> aregiven as they were made because time <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> place have bearing upon what is 'said'. I have had toselect, <strong>of</strong> course, but have done my best to omit nothing essential. <strong>The</strong> work has presented especialdifficulty because <strong>Meher</strong> <strong>Baba</strong> is silent <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> writes nothing, but I have spared no pains to be exact <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>to avoid vagueness. I am well aware that the book lacks perspective, for <strong>Meher</strong> <strong>Baba</strong> is not in thedist<strong>an</strong>ce; whatever value it has lies in that fact, for it is written <strong>with</strong> living witnesses available <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> isa record verified on the spot. I have brought to its writing my own experience, but have done my bestto maintain the necessary degree <strong>of</strong> detachment <strong>of</strong> mind, if not <strong>of</strong> heart.I do not think one c<strong>an</strong> find <strong>an</strong>y parallel in modem times <strong>with</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> this simple, subtle, innocent, unpredictable, alarming <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> engrossing m<strong>an</strong>. He seems to me to be beyond the scope <strong>of</strong>familiar categories, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> our experience is insufficient to account for him except on his own terms.ACKNOWLEDGMENTS<strong>The</strong> account <strong>of</strong> the early years <strong>of</strong> <strong>Meher</strong> <strong>Baba</strong> is based upon a record compiled by K. J. Dastur, supplemented by my own enquiries, also upon the diaries <strong>of</strong> the late Behli 1. Ir<strong>an</strong>i <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> variousdiaries <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> papers lent to me by Indi<strong>an</strong> <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Western followers, in particular the late F. H.Dadach<strong>an</strong>ji. I have known <strong>Meher</strong> <strong>Baba</strong> since 1931. I have been to India twice <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> visited m<strong>an</strong>yplaces associated <strong>with</strong> him <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> have
