28 <strong>THE</strong> <strong>GOD</strong>-<strong>MAN</strong>M<strong>an</strong>y stories are told <strong>of</strong> str<strong>an</strong>ge occurrences at this time. It is said that one evening fourIr<strong>an</strong>i youths came intending to confuse <strong>Meher</strong> <strong>Baba</strong> <strong>with</strong> questions <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> to beat him as ahypocrite. But when they saw him not one could open his mouth or do <strong>an</strong>ything but lookshamefaced. <strong>Baba</strong> reproached them <strong>with</strong> chicken-heartedness; they still could not say a word,but fell down at his feet <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> went away.One evening Jamshed R. Ir<strong>an</strong>i, a maternal uncle <strong>of</strong> Behramji, thought he would like toknow what happened in the hut from nine 0' clock at night until dawn. So <strong>with</strong> a few friendshe went to see for himself. He knew where the hut was, for he visited <strong>Baba</strong> almost daily; butwhen Jamshed <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> his friends got on the Ferguson College Road they could find no trace <strong>of</strong>the hut. <strong>The</strong>y searched in vain, they declared, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> had to return home. At seven 0' clockJamshed brought <strong>an</strong> <strong>of</strong>fering <strong>of</strong> fruit <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> flowers <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> confessed the wrong he had done. <strong>Baba</strong>showed no displeasure.When <strong>Baba</strong> retired it was the duty <strong>of</strong> Behli to keep watch. He was not permitted to go tosleep. One night, however, he did sleep for a short time, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> on awakening found to his horrorthat <strong>Baba</strong>'s bed was vac<strong>an</strong>t. Behli was about to open the door <strong>of</strong> the hut, when weird figuresappeared; for he had been forbidden to open the door at night whatever happened. Horrified, hesat down <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> wept, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> went to sleep again. On awakening he found <strong>Baba</strong> in bed.Another story is <strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong> occasion when Behli was relieved by <strong>an</strong>other disciple, Arjun Supekar.Arjun was instructed to sit outside the hut <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> not to permit <strong>an</strong>yone to approach it. At aboutone o'clock at night <strong>Baba</strong> called to him, 'Arjun, are you wide awake?' Arjun said that he was.'Whatever may happen, don't be frightened', warned <strong>Baba</strong>. <strong>The</strong>n before very long Arjun wasstartled by seeing two men in white robes coming towards him. He could hardly speak, butm<strong>an</strong>aged to call out, 'Who are you?' <strong>Baba</strong> replied from the hut, saying 'What's the matter,Arjun?' <strong>The</strong> figures v<strong>an</strong>ished on the inst<strong>an</strong>t, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>Baba</strong> himself appeared.During the first three months <strong>Baba</strong> used to go every Thursday evening to Kaspa Peth, wherehe would receive the devotion <strong>of</strong> his followers. Every Sunday he went on <strong>an</strong> excursion. OneSunday, in the midst <strong>of</strong> merrymaking, he ordered one <strong>of</strong> his disciples who had come <strong>with</strong> abicycle to break it into pieces <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> throw them into the well, a stone's throw from the placewhere they were. Nobody could underst<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> this, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>Baba</strong> gave no expl<strong>an</strong>ation. When the partyreturned they found that Behli had accidentally fallen into the well near <strong>Baba</strong>'s hut, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> hadescaped from being drowned. <strong>Baba</strong> said when
