12 PROTECTED AREAS<br />

12.1 Prevailing Situation<br />

The focus of this chapter is on National Parks and any other protected areas or habitats<br />

important for biodiversity conservation (even if not legally protected) that might be<br />

affected by the Project (like the mangroves in the estuary, which is in general an area of<br />

high biodiversity used for fish nursery), or that might be used in any way for mitigating<br />

impacts, if required.<br />

Liberia has 22 protected areas consisting of 4 National Parks, 3 Nature Conservation<br />

Units, and 15 National Forests. 20 of the protected areas are terrestrial and 2 marine.<br />

In addition to the terrestrial protected areas Liberia has 8 wetlands. Presently, the first 5<br />

sites in the Table below are designated as wetlands of international importance<br />

according to the Ramsar convention.
