2.2.7 Compensation<br />

� One dollar per acre for land on the margin of a river<br />

� Fifty cents per acre for land in the interior<br />

� Thirty dollars per lot for town lots<br />

Article 24 of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia provides the basis for compensation for<br />

acquired land.<br />

It states that, “expropriation may be authorized for national security issues or where the<br />

public health and safety are endangered, or for any other public purposes, provided.”<br />

For expropriation to be successful the following issues should be addressed:<br />

� Prompt payment of just compensation;<br />

� That such expropriation or the compensation offered may be challenged freely<br />

by the owner of the property in a court of law with no penalty for having such<br />

action; and<br />

� That when property taken for public use ceases to be soused, republic shall<br />

accord the former owner the right of first refusal to reacquire the property.<br />
