In 2007 she was <strong>the</strong> inaugural recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> NorthAmerican Animal Welfare Award, co-sponsored by Procter & Gamble <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong> Humane Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States.Ge<strong>of</strong>frey A. Wood, DVM, PhD, DVSc, is Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor in <strong>the</strong> Department<strong>of</strong> Pathobiology at <strong>the</strong> Ontario Veterinary College, University <strong>of</strong>Guelph, Canada. Dr. Wood has a doctorate in cancer biology <strong>and</strong> a doctoratein veterinary pathology. He has been involved in design or pathologiccharacterization <strong>of</strong> hundreds <strong>of</strong> genetically engineered rodents, both as <strong>the</strong><strong>for</strong>mer Associate Director <strong>of</strong> Pathology at <strong>the</strong> Centre <strong>for</strong> Modeling HumanDisease in Toronto, <strong>and</strong> in his current position. His lab conducts researchon cancer genetics <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> metastasis, with a focus on bone <strong>and</strong>prostate cancer. Dr. Wood’s research collaborations include projects investigatingvarious aspects <strong>of</strong> a wide range <strong>of</strong> different cancer types, as well asstudies on stem cell biology, immunity, <strong>and</strong> inflammation.Hanno Würbel, Dr.sc.nat, is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Animal Welfare <strong>and</strong> Ethology at<strong>the</strong> Justus Liebig University in Giessen, Germany. He has studied biology(zoology) at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Berne, Switzerl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> graduated from<strong>the</strong> ETH Zürich, Switzerl<strong>and</strong> with a doctorate in natural sciences. He hasexperience in animal behavior <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> scientific assessment <strong>of</strong> animalwell-being, <strong>and</strong> has mostly worked with rodents, but also with rabbits, dogs,poultry, <strong>and</strong> horses. His research focuses on environment-dependent plasticity<strong>of</strong> brain <strong>and</strong> behavior in relation to questions <strong>of</strong> animal husb<strong>and</strong>ry <strong>and</strong>animal welfare. In 2005 Dr. Würbel received <strong>the</strong> Hessian Animal WelfareResearch Prize <strong>and</strong> in 2009 <strong>the</strong> Felix Wankel Animal Welfare ResearchAward. He is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Animal Welfare Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Germangovernment, Central Animal Welfare <strong>Office</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Giessen,<strong>and</strong> head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University’s Central Animal Facility. He is also a councilmember <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Society <strong>of</strong> Applied Ethology (ISAE), editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Journal <strong>of</strong> Applied Animal Welfare Science, <strong>and</strong> editorial board member <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> journal Applied Animal behaiour Science.
