HVAC Control in the New MillenniumFigure 5-3. Microsoft’s DirectX multimedia architecture provides everythingneeded for a good operator interface.Microsoft runs video drivers in the kernel of Windows 2000 andNT 4.0. In Windows 2000, this helps high-end graphics applications, such as operator interfaces, but may cause problems in controlling aprocess on Windows NT. Standard VGA drivers can be used in criticalNT applications.Microsoft has not been able to provide all of the DirectX capabilitieson NT due to security concerns. The driver model needs to protectall the interfaces to the OS. If the interface to the hard disk is not protectedproperly, loss of data and the system can occur. Windows 2000has significantly improved real-time performance capabilities over WindowsNT 4.0.Windows NT and Windows CE both have their place in control. They can provide complementary control solutions. Think & Do Softwarehas a PC control software package for control and (HMI) that isscalable for both Windows NT and/or Windows CE. This scalable approachallows both NT and CE platforms to use the same code in small©2001 by The Fairmont Press, Inc. All rights reserved.
