These devices are expected to proliferate over the next decade.There will be more multithreaded applications and multitaskingthat take advantage of these architectures. These multiprocessing designsmay delay the shift to more exotic computer designs.The embedded-CPU market would be the first area for CMPs.CMPs would then move to workstations and servers, although memorybandwidth for the multiple cores could slow this trend.Future BusesEven the fastest processor can seem slow if your PC’s other subsystemsand data pathways are not up to high speeds. Intel and otherchip providers are assaulting the throughput problem by improving thebuses the data must move through.Intel’s 440LX AGPset chip set introduced the Accelerated GraphicsPort, which is a faster than PCI bus between your CPU and graphicscoprocessor. AGP also links the graphics adapter to system memory forstoring the large texture maps that are used in 3D applications.New system board chips will also support faster system busspeeds of 100-MHz or greater. Increasing the bus speed lets the PC takeadvantage of faster memory types.
