Word understand<strong>in</strong>g is naturallanguage understand<strong>in</strong>g and deals with <strong>the</strong> relationships betweendifferent words.Most people th<strong>in</strong>k that <strong>the</strong>y hear and understand about 80% ofwhat is said. The actual percentage can be less than 50%. One factor thatcauses a low speech recognition percentage is <strong>the</strong> use of homonyms,words that sound alike, but have different mean<strong>in</strong>gs. Hear<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>the</strong> process of respond<strong>in</strong>g tosound waves. This requires some type of specialized sound-wave receptor.A microphone is a transducer that converts sound waves to electricalenergy.
