2.2.7 <strong>The</strong> prospects <strong>of</strong> SACCOs <strong>in</strong> Tanzanian economy<br />

<strong>The</strong> identified problems <strong>of</strong> SACCOs notwithstand<strong>in</strong>g their enormous depth, breadth and<br />

<strong>in</strong>tensity it is only fair and proper to acknowledge the fact that the government did not fold<br />

its arms to watch the SACCOs wallow <strong>in</strong> the gamut <strong>of</strong> problems. Doubtless, the government<br />

fully appreciates the opportunities SACCOs create for employment, their contributions to<br />

economic growth and development as well as the constra<strong>in</strong>ts and difficulties <strong>in</strong> their operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

environment.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Government <strong>of</strong> Tanzania acknowledges SACCOs as major news <strong>of</strong> ameliorat<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

poverty status <strong>of</strong> the majority <strong>of</strong> the population. In the rural sector SACCOs are see<strong>in</strong>g as<br />

important <strong><strong>in</strong>stitutions</strong> that will play a significant <strong>role</strong> <strong>in</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g rural credit carry<strong>in</strong>g out a<br />

host <strong>of</strong> other <strong>in</strong>itiatives to bolster output and raise the quality and quantity <strong>of</strong> the products <strong>of</strong><br />

their members.<br />

<strong>The</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g are the future prospect <strong>of</strong> the SACCOs <strong>in</strong> Tanzania:-<br />

� <strong>The</strong> cooperatives will widen their scope <strong>of</strong> operation by establish<strong>in</strong>g SACCOs <strong>in</strong> various<br />

sectors <strong>of</strong> the economy for example energy, transport, communication, <strong>in</strong>surance,<br />

water fisheries, hous<strong>in</strong>g, trade etc<br />

� Encourag<strong>in</strong>g and support<strong>in</strong>g through policies and affirmative action the participation <strong>of</strong><br />

women <strong>in</strong> cooperatives (as active member’s leaders, pr<strong>of</strong>essional managers and<br />

employees.<br />

� Conduct<strong>in</strong>g research, gather<strong>in</strong>g and dissem<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g vital <strong>in</strong>formation to cooperatives <strong>in</strong><br />

particular and to farmers generally, on <strong>in</strong>ternal and <strong>in</strong>ternational markets.<br />

� Establish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a national cooperative bank that work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> unison with the expand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sav<strong>in</strong>gs and credit cooperatives (SACCOs) which will provide credit to cooperatives at<br />
