Appendix A suggests that an average <strong>in</strong> the period 1994-1996 deposit mobilization <strong>in</strong>creased<br />

by 145.1%. In the year 1995-1996 the change <strong>in</strong> deposit mobilization was higher by 40.64%.<br />

This <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> deposit mobilization suggests the <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> the effectiveness <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />

mobilization.<br />

However, operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come per total costs, net loan portfolio per total assets and total<br />

<strong>in</strong>come per total expenses suggest that micro f<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong><strong>in</strong>stitutions</strong> did not perform well <strong>in</strong> the<br />

stated period. Operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come per costs <strong>in</strong>creased at a decreas<strong>in</strong>g rate <strong>of</strong> 5% suggest<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

costs outweighed operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come. Furthermore, net loan portfolio per total assets decreased<br />

by more than confirm<strong>in</strong>g the decl<strong>in</strong>e and limited capacity <strong>of</strong> lend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the micro f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />

<strong><strong>in</strong>stitutions</strong> <strong>in</strong> Tanzania.<br />
