In general, SACCOs <strong>in</strong> Tanzania have problems for f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g their activity. <strong>The</strong> SACCOs are<br />

short <strong>of</strong> funds for necessary <strong>in</strong>vestments <strong>in</strong> education and technological resources, such as<br />

computers, build<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>of</strong>fice or keep<strong>in</strong>g a safe, thus they could need external support. One<br />

advantage with<strong>in</strong> a majority <strong>of</strong> the SACCOs is that, even if struggl<strong>in</strong>g hard, they have<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>ed self-reliant. Self reliance <strong>in</strong>dicates potential for be<strong>in</strong>g susta<strong>in</strong>able, however at the<br />

same time a precondition for susta<strong>in</strong>ability as afford<strong>in</strong>g to provide members adequate services.<br />

<strong>The</strong> level <strong>of</strong> knowledge concern<strong>in</strong>g operat<strong>in</strong>g the SACCOs and f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g sav<strong>in</strong>g products,<br />

differs among SACCOs. But poor bookkeep<strong>in</strong>g skills are a prevalent problem <strong>in</strong> many<br />

SACCOs. However, SACCOs do have advantages; for example, occupational SACCOs have a<br />

great possibility reach<strong>in</strong>g potential members, s<strong>in</strong>ce they are situated at work<strong>in</strong>g places.<br />

Emphasiz<strong>in</strong>g SACCO’s uncomplicated rules and regulations can be another way to attract<br />

potential savers and borrowers.<br />

Members <strong>in</strong> the two occupational SACCOs studied f<strong>in</strong>d higher liquidity and a more beneficial<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest rate to be the most important improvements to be made, before want<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

sav<strong>in</strong>gs. F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g liquidity important might be an <strong>in</strong>dication on members be<strong>in</strong>g worried over<br />

the future economic situation, they want to be certa<strong>in</strong> that their sav<strong>in</strong>gs are available at any<br />

time.<br />

A great majority <strong>in</strong> the survey performed f<strong>in</strong>ds the SACCOs security to be <strong>in</strong>suffient, and<br />

moreover that provid<strong>in</strong>g safety on sav<strong>in</strong>gs is one <strong>of</strong> the most important qualities when us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ancial services <strong>of</strong>fered by the SACCOs.<br />

In sub-Sahara Africa, there is ample evidence that the poor, particularly those <strong>in</strong> the rural<br />

sector, value both deposit and credit facilities. <strong>The</strong> existence and growth <strong>of</strong> cooperative<br />

bank<strong>in</strong>g and comb<strong>in</strong>ed sav<strong>in</strong>gs and credit <strong><strong>in</strong>stitutions</strong> <strong>in</strong> the micr<strong>of</strong><strong>in</strong>ance sector <strong>in</strong> sub-Saharan<br />

Africa reflects the grow<strong>in</strong>g demand for both sav<strong>in</strong>gs and credit facilities.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are strong l<strong>in</strong>kages between formal and <strong><strong>in</strong>formal</strong> micr<strong>of</strong><strong>in</strong>ance <strong><strong>in</strong>stitutions</strong> (MFIs). <strong>The</strong><br />

formal <strong><strong>in</strong>stitutions</strong> have, <strong>in</strong> some cases, drawn on the sav<strong>in</strong>gs mobilization methods earlier<br />

developed by traditional <strong><strong>in</strong>formal</strong> MFIs. In some cases, the former have also become bankers<br />

to the latter.<br />
