organizations, help members achieve their social and economic needs and goals through the<br />

establishment and operation <strong>of</strong> autonomous, member-owned bus<strong>in</strong>esses, which generate<br />

<strong>in</strong>come and employment by pool<strong>in</strong>g limited resources and reduc<strong>in</strong>g risks while simultaneously<br />

promot<strong>in</strong>g social <strong>in</strong>tegration and cohesion <strong>in</strong> communities. <strong>The</strong>se bus<strong>in</strong>ess enterprises operate<br />

<strong>in</strong> the private sector but with democratic forms <strong>of</strong> stakeholder accountability. Unlike other<br />

types <strong>of</strong> private sector bus<strong>in</strong>ess organizations, cooperatives subscribe to a set <strong>of</strong> core values<br />

and pr<strong>in</strong>ciples, as summarized <strong>in</strong> Box 1 below, which emphasize social responsibility and<br />

community development.<br />

What is a Cooperative?<br />

A Cooperative is an autonomous association <strong>of</strong> persons united voluntarily to meet their<br />

common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jo<strong>in</strong>tly owned and<br />

democratically controlled enterprise.<br />

Cooperatives values<br />

Cooperatives are based on the values <strong>of</strong> self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality,<br />

equity and solidarity. In the tradition <strong>of</strong> their founders, cooperative members believe <strong>in</strong> the<br />

ethical values <strong>of</strong> honesty, openness, social responsibility, and car<strong>in</strong>g for others.<br />

Seven pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> Cooperatives<br />

1. Voluntary and open membership<br />

2. Democratic member control<br />

3. Member economic participation<br />

4. Autonomy and <strong>in</strong>dependence<br />

5. Education, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

6. Cooperation among cooperatives<br />

7. Concern for the community<br />
