us<strong>in</strong>g poor farm<strong>in</strong>g technology and ma<strong>in</strong>ly depend<strong>in</strong>g on weather, cash crops are produced by<br />

both small scale and big scale farmers. Thus poverty reduction strategies among different<br />

occupation groups are not the same, but will differ follow<strong>in</strong>g the type <strong>of</strong> activities done and<br />

the place /areas where the activities are done.<br />

To crop producers the common strategy will be to <strong>in</strong>crease the quality and quantity <strong>of</strong> crops<br />

produced while also expect<strong>in</strong>g to sell them at higher price value than the cost <strong>of</strong> production<br />

hence gett<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>of</strong>its. To animal keepers <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries the strategy could be to<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease the number and quality <strong>of</strong> animals produced and sold.<br />

To traders, the strategy could be to expand bus<strong>in</strong>ess size, sales and pr<strong>of</strong>its. To employees <strong>in</strong><br />

the formal sectors, the strategy could be to <strong>in</strong>vest the borrowed funds <strong>in</strong> the ventures which<br />

will supplement their earned salary <strong>in</strong>come.<br />

Still <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestment, there are wide ventures where <strong>in</strong>vestment could take place. <strong>The</strong>se<br />

are like physical <strong>in</strong>vestment i.e. <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> physical projects such as livestock, farm<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustries, or <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial assets <strong>of</strong> the companies listed <strong>in</strong> stock<br />

exchange i.e. shares and stock <strong>of</strong> private companies or treasury bills, treasury bonds <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Government. Such <strong>in</strong>vestments <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial assets have several policy implications such as<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g the number <strong>of</strong> people own<strong>in</strong>g companies, while also <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g participation <strong>of</strong><br />

households <strong>in</strong> monetary policy and fiscal policy operations <strong>of</strong> the country whereby monetary<br />

policy is def<strong>in</strong>ed as actions <strong>of</strong> the Central Bank to change the volume <strong>of</strong> money supply <strong>in</strong><br />

order to achieve certa<strong>in</strong> predeterm<strong>in</strong>ed objectives such as employment, poverty reduction,<br />

stable balance <strong>of</strong> payment etc. On the other hand, fiscal policy aims at achiev<strong>in</strong>g the same<br />

objectives through chang<strong>in</strong>g the composition and rates <strong>of</strong> government expenditures and<br />

government revenues, <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> domestic and external/foreign resources.<br />

<strong>The</strong> contribution <strong>of</strong> Sav<strong>in</strong>gs and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOs) and other organized<br />

micr<strong>of</strong><strong>in</strong>ance <strong><strong>in</strong>stitutions</strong> to reduce poverty and <strong>in</strong>come <strong>in</strong>equality <strong>in</strong> the country is the<br />

comb<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> policy and non policy factors, the <strong>role</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Government, the number <strong>of</strong><br />

households jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g SACCOs, the amount <strong>of</strong> loans given to SACCOs members, the amount <strong>of</strong><br />

loan used for <strong>in</strong>tended <strong>in</strong>vestment purposes by SACCOs members, the rate <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest rate<br />

charged on micro loans given to SACCOs members, taxation policy <strong>of</strong> the government on<br />
