PRINCIPLES OF NAVAL ENGINEERINGthe headers, serves as a telltale^ in the event ofhandhole leakage in the economizer.Superheater vents are installed at or nearthe top of each superheater header or headersection; superheater drains are installed at ornear the bottom of each header or header section.Thus each pass of the superheater isvented and drained.Superheater drains discharge through gravity(open-funnel) drains to the fresh water draincollecting system while steam is being raisedin the boiler. After a specified pressure hasbeen reached, the superheater drains are shiftedto discharge through steam traps^ to the highpressure drain system. The steam traps allowcontinuous drainage of the superheater withoutexcessive loss of steam or pressure.Figure 11-14 illustrates diagrammaticallythe arrangement of superheater vents and drainson a newer type of single-furnace boiler. Thisillustration also shows the superheater protectionsteam connections. Note, also, the waterdruminstallation of the desuperheater.Sampling ConnectionsIt is difficult to say just where the connectionfor drawing test samples of boiler watermay be located, since this connection is foundin different places on different types of boilers.On some boilers the sampling connection islocated at the rear of the water drum. On othersit comes off of the bottom blow line betweenthe water drum and the bottom blow valve,either at the front of the boiler or at about themiddle of the water drum. On boilers that havea chemical feed pipe in the steam drum, the testsamples may be drawn through the nozzle connectionof the chemical feedpipe. On some shipsthe surface blow line connection is used to takeboiler water samples.It is also difficult to say just what the samplingconnection may be called. On some drawingsit is identified as a test cock; on othersas a salinity cock; on others as a salinometervalve; and on still others as a water test sampleconnection.A sample cooler is fitted to the outlet sideof the sampling connection. The cooler bringsthe temperature of the sample water down belowthe boiling point at atmospheric pressure andthus keeps the water from flashing into steamas it is drawn from the higher pressure of theboiler to the lower pressure of the fireroom.Feed Stop and Check ValvesManually operated feed stop and check valvesare installed in the feed line to each boiler."*Feed stop and check valves are operated manually,with a separate handwheel for each valve.In addition, the feed check valve has remoteoperating gear so that it can be operated fromthe firing aisle. In normal operation, the stopvalve is kept fully open and the check valve isused to regulate the supply of feed water to theboiler. When automatic feed water controls arein use, both the feed stop valve and the feedcheck valve are kept fully open so that they willnot interfere with the automatic feeding of theboiler. (Similarly, the automatic feed regulatingvalve is kept fully open when the boiler is beingfed manually through the feed check valve.The feed stop and check valves shown infigure 11-15 are combined in one manifold casting.Note, however, that there are two separatevalves. In some installations the two valves arehoused in separate flanged castings which arebolted together. No matter what type of installationis used, the feed stop valve is always installedbetween the feed check valve and theeconomizer inlet.Steam Stop ValvesMain steam stop valves are used to cutboilers in on the main steam line and to disconnectthem from the line. The main steamstop valve located just after the superheateroutlet is usually called the main steam boilerstop. Figure 11-16 shows an external view ofa main steam boiler stop. Figure 11-17 showsa cross-sectional view of a globe-type mainsteam boiler stop.
