Chapter 15, -PUMPS AND FORCED DRAFT BLOWERS5. Never tie down the speed-limiting governor.Be sure it is in good operating conditionat all times. Be sure it is properlyset.6. Observe all safety precautions requiredin connection with the operation <strong>of</strong> the drivingturbine.Casualty ControlIf a forced draft blower fails, take the followingaction:1. If one blower fails when two blowers arein use, speed up the other blower.2. K only one blower is in use, secure theburners immediately to prevent a flareback.3. Start the standby blower and notify theengineroom <strong>of</strong> the casualty because <strong>of</strong> a possibleneed for a reduction in speed.4. Determine the cause <strong>of</strong> the failure andremedy the trouble as soon as possible.The rupture <strong>of</strong> a forced draft blower lube oilline is a casualty in itself, as well as one whichcan lead to blower failure. The rupture <strong>of</strong> alube oil line is discussed here separately because<strong>of</strong> the special hazard <strong>of</strong> fire that is involved.If a forced draft blower lube oil line isruptured, take the following action immediately.1. If two blowers are in use, secure the affectedblower and speed up the other. If onlyone blower is in use, secure the burners immediatelyto prevent a flareback. Secure theaffected blower and light <strong>of</strong>f the standby blower.2. Notify the engineroom because <strong>of</strong> a possibleneed for a reduction in speed.3. Get firefighting equipment to the scene.4. Wipe up all oil that has spilled out. Flushout and wipe out the bilges as necessary.5. Repair or renew the ruptured section assoon as possible.6. Refill the reservoir with clean oil. Testthe new section; if it is satisfactory, the blowercan be returned to service.421
