In this type <strong>of</strong> bearing, the slipper consists<strong>of</strong> four pivoted-shoe segments, similar tothe pivoted shoes used in Kingsbury bearings.The segments are held together loosely by awire spring.Another type <strong>of</strong> slipper bearing is shown infigure 23-13. In this type <strong>of</strong> bearing, the slipperconsists <strong>of</strong> six segments which are fastened inplace by dowel pins. This type <strong>of</strong> bearing issometimes called a fixed-pivot slipper bearing.Accessory DrivesBecause the turbine and the compressor areon the same rotating shaft, a popular misconceptionis that the gas turbine engine has onlyone moving part. This is not the case, however.A gas turbine engine requires a starting device(which is usually a moving part), some kind <strong>of</strong>control mechanism, and power take-<strong>of</strong>fs.The accessory drive section <strong>of</strong> the gasturbine engine takes care <strong>of</strong> these variousaccessory functions. The primary purpose <strong>of</strong>the accessory drive section is to provide spacefor the mounting <strong>of</strong> the accessories requiredfor the operation and control <strong>of</strong> the engine.Secondary purposes include acting as an oilreservoir and/or oil sump and providing forFigure 23-13.— Slipper bearing(fixed-pivot type).147.147604
