This remote operatinggear is frequently mechanical or pneumatic,although hydraulic rem.ote operating gear isused for these valves on some ships. The pneumaticand hydraulic types of remote operatinggear for these valves allow the valves to beclosed but not opened from the remote station.Another example of emergency remote operatinggear is the gear that allows the quickclosingfuel oil valve to be closed from a remotestation in the fireroom escape trunk or from thedeck above and near the access to the space.Still other examples of emergency remote operatinggear include gear for operating somecross-connection valves, main drainage valves,and main condenser injection and overboard dischargevalves.Remote operating gear for valves includes avalve position indicator to show whether thevalve is open or closed.385
