being the territory of Turkey) and with ancient Egyptians who had had developed secret
sciences and “sacred script”), much of the invisible world knowledge was explained
with the help of allegories understandable for inhabitants of one or another locality. For
example, the process and the outcome of a joint meditation of a group of people working
with signs (or setting a specific working sign to exert influences over the masses) was
explained for beginner initiates in associations which they could easily grasp. The area
of a sign influence was associatively compared to setting a net in the sea by fishermen
(for a fisherman profession was very popular in those times). The beginners were told
that a sign set in a specific place, say, in a room, a temple, or in a city square, was
influencing people who got into this place, roughly speaking, like a net set in a certain
area of the sea for fishing. In short, in ancient times they used allegories which could be
understood by a person of a corresponding epoch. Nowadays, everything may certainly
be explained to people with the help of modern examples. For instance, the impact of
signs or symbols may be compared to a radio receiver operating at a given frequency
and spreading radio waves to certain distances, or to a light of a lamp illuminating a
certain part of a street. At that, these would still be only allegories, because
contemporary people are also very far from understanding the phenomena relating to
processes taking place in other dimensions.
Thus, owing to such associative comparison widespread in secret societies, the word “to
sumbolon” appeared in everyday practice of people (who, as the proverb says, did not
know what they were speaking about), and this word started to mean a joint activity of
several fishermen setting nets during fishing. So, everything has happened as usual:
those who know nothing about the spiritual side of the matter always allot the meaning
of material objects and phenomena to the information they hear, based on their
materialistic understanding. Nevertheless, at the same time, the word “to sumbolon” has
been continued to be used by people initiated into the genuine knowledge. Eventually,
simultaneously with the older word “shma” (meaning a sign, a banner, a heavenly sign),
the word “symbol” came to be used to designate “joining of the invisible and the
visible”, “revealing the invisible reality through a visible sign the secret meaning of
which may be grasped only by a certain group of persons”. And later on the “symbol”
totally replaced the older genuine word.
It’s also important to learn how Arhonts usually react to any growth of popularity of the
