against a lion and victory over it as a symbol of taming of the cleverest and most powerseeking
Left Aspect, the Animal Nature basis in man!
Rigden: Well, everything is simple, once you grasp the obvious… At that, the symbol
of John is an eagle. However, in the context of the four Aspects knowledge, originally
there was another bird. In actual fact, a falcon should be depicted here, if we follow the
primary sources from which priests copied the story for their new religion. For many
ancient nations including Egyptians, a bird (a falcon) was a symbolical designation of
the Front Aspect. An eagle was already a priests’ insertion into the information they
adopted from other peoples. But this is a totally different story.
Now, let’s discuss what is so remarkable in the subject of the Saviour in Glory Orthodox
icon. All these “zoomorphic creatures” hold the Book, and are located as symbols at the
edges of a hidden picture — a slanting cross shaped as rays shedding from the cube.
The latter is symbolically depicted in a rhombus shape. Generally speaking, in the
picture a blue (green) oval is put over a red square, with a red rhombus on top of the
oval (as a symbol of square transformation into a rhombus, i.e. formation of a cube put
on one of its corners).
Anastasia: It’s amazing, for on the plane, in isometric projection a cube is a regular
hexagon, while each of its facets represents a rhombus! Everything depends on how you
look at it.
Rigden: Quite right. In this case, I would put it more precise: everything depends on
who exactly is looking. So, on the icon, Jesus is sitting on the throne against the red cube
background. At that, one of His feet is stepping on the corner of the cube, whereas the
other foot is inside the blue oval. In Christianity, the latter is also called “the almondshaped
halo” or “the fish maw”, and is regarded as a symbol of the Divine power
surrounding Christ upon His resurrection and transfiguration. Within the blue (green)
oval there are seraphs (originally depicted in red colour) and cherubs (originally
depicted in blue colour) as symbols of the celestial hierarchy. And each of them is
depicted as a face surrounded with six wings!
Please, recall the masks (schematic images of human faces) on the Large Shigir Idol
which symbolize the dimensions. And such conventional designation of other
