Cathedral iconostasis in Moscow Kremlin. Yet, the question is who really sees it? In
Christian religion, the Saviour in Glory symbolizes a highly complex theological
concept of how Christ will look when He appears at end of times in His entire power
and glory for the Last Judgment and further transformation of the Universe, in order to
execute God’s Dispensation in the world: “So that everything earthly and heavenly is
united under Christ’s head”.
Rigden: This icon is considered a kind of a whole treatise in the symbolism, the
prophecy of the future in the language of iconography.
Anastasia: It is interesting that there is a special emphasis on the Book! During the
Second Coming the Christ is holding an open Book, all the zoomorphic figures kept by
the book. This means the Gospel, or this symbol indicates to something general
allegorical meaning? I know that in the early times of Christianity, Jesus Christ is
symbolically represented in the form of Book, which comes down the dove as a
phenomenon of the Holy Spirit. I was also interested why exactly the turtledove is often
mentioned in the Bible. It turns out that it is different from the pigeon, it less in size and
belongs to the migratory birds. Turtledove has appeared in Palestine in the early spring.
She was considered as the first message bird, clear bird.
Rigden: it is really true. I will say even more, originally in early Christianity the Holy
Spirit is depicted as white turtledove (the dove later), but not a pigeon. Qua it was a
symbol of divine Love, the creative female principle, the Ancestress of all that exists
(Allat). And this is connected with an even more ancient knowledge, when the divine
trinity was depicted as a Father, Mother and Son. For example, this triad was in ancient
Egypt: Osiris-Isida-Gor. Later in Christianity a turtledove (in other images - a dove)
were depictured mainly on paintings of the Annunciation (in the context of picture with
the plot with the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary) and christening of the Christ.
And what regarding the Book, you correctly noted. The emphasis exactly placed on the
fact of the presence of the Book in principle, moreover in its open view, which is
readable. In Christian culture symbolic of the book is quite meaningful and deep, so
each drew, based on the generally accepted canons. It could be the Glad Tidings, the
Book of Life with the names of the Redeemed, the Book of Revelation about prophecies
