BOXING, SPARRING OR WRESTLING MATCHES<br />

5.48.040 Commercial Matches - Permit<br />

Required - Fee - Special Police.<br />

Except as expressly permitted by Sections 5.48.020 - 5.48.040, no person shall conduct, carry on or engage in any<br />

boxing contest or sparring or wrestling match or exhibition for prizes <strong>of</strong> purses or to which an admission fee is<br />

received, within the <strong>City</strong>. (Prior <strong>Code</strong> §10.1.)<br />

5.48.020 Amateur Matches Permitted - School, College, University Defined.<br />

Amateur boxing contests or amateur sparring or wrestling matches or exhibitions or any combination there<strong>of</strong>,<br />

conducted by or participated in exclusively by any school, college or university or by any association, or organization<br />

composed exclusively <strong>of</strong> such schools, colleges or universities when each contestant in any such contest, match or<br />

exhibition is a bona fide student regularly enrolled for not less than one-half (1/2) time in such school, college or<br />

university are hereby permitted and allowed to be held upon the grounds <strong>of</strong> any such school, college or university or<br />

within the C-2 Commercial Zone or less restrictive zone as set forth in the Zoning Ordinance <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong> or in Laguna<br />

Field or Pershing Field within the <strong>City</strong>.<br />

As used in this section, "school, college or university" shall mean every school, college or university supported in<br />

whole or in part from public funds and every other school, college or university which is determined by the State<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> Education to be maintained primarily for the giving <strong>of</strong> general academic instruction. (Ord. 3140 §1, 1966;<br />

prior <strong>Code</strong> §10.2.)<br />

5.48.030 Commercial Matches - Location - Supervision.<br />

Boxing contests, sparring and wrestling matches or exhibitions for prizes or purses, or where an admission fee is<br />

received, are hereby allowed within the <strong>City</strong> within any M-1 industrial district <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong> and within Pershing Field<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong> and within the so-called Laguna Field <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong>, under the exclusive jurisdiction <strong>of</strong> the State Athletic<br />

Commission, which Commission shall have the sole direction, management and control over all such contests,<br />

matches or exhibitions to be conducted, held or given within the <strong>City</strong>. (Prior <strong>Code</strong> §10.3.)<br />

5.48.040 Commercial Matches - Permit Required - Fee - Special Police.<br />

Every person, before exercising any <strong>of</strong> the privileges conferred by Section 5.48.030 shall obtain from the <strong>City</strong><br />

Treasurer, a permit to conduct any boxing contests, sparring or wrestling matches or exhibitions where an admission<br />

fee is received, and for such permit shall pay to the <strong>City</strong> Treasurer in advance, a fee <strong>of</strong> fifty dollars ($50.00). The<br />

permit, when issued, shall entitle the permittee to conduct such contests, matches or exhibitions for a period <strong>of</strong> ninety<br />

(90) days after the date <strong>of</strong> issuance, subject to the rules, regulations and orders <strong>of</strong> the State Athletic Commission;<br />

provided further, that each permittee shall employ the number <strong>of</strong> Policemen designated by the Chief <strong>of</strong> Police, and<br />

shall maintain the <strong>of</strong>ficers on duty at or about the premises at least one (1) hour prior to and throughout any boxing<br />

contest, sparring or wrestling match or exhibition which may be conducted within the <strong>City</strong>. The <strong>of</strong>ficers must be<br />

appointed by the Chief <strong>of</strong> Police. (Prior <strong>Code</strong> §10.4. Editor's note--The ordinance from which this section was<br />

derived was an initiative measure voted by the citizens on April 1, 1936.)<br />
