neg<strong>at</strong>ive emotions. Th<strong>at</strong> is one <strong>of</strong> the reasons why full lips<br />

are so appealing—they are subconsciously interpreted as a<br />

signal th<strong>at</strong> people are responding to us in a positive way.<br />

Lips th<strong>at</strong> form as if to blow out air are almost always associ<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

with resign<strong>at</strong>ion, skepticism, or frustr<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

A completely involuntary move th<strong>at</strong> a mouth makes is to<br />

quiver as a result <strong>of</strong> being startled. Th<strong>at</strong>’s exactly wh<strong>at</strong> happened<br />

when I saw a grocery clerk accidentally knock over<br />

a display in the store—<strong>and</strong> her shaking lower lip <strong>and</strong> chin<br />

registered her surprise <strong>and</strong> dismay.<br />

Yawning<br />

Usually, when we see someone yawning we think they are<br />

bored or tired. But psychologists now believe th<strong>at</strong> yawning<br />

may be an escape mechanism used to avoid difficult<br />

or stressful issues. People may yawn r<strong>at</strong>her than discuss a<br />

painful subject.
