well. Our bodies <strong>and</strong> emotions are so closely linked th<strong>at</strong> by<br />

assuming another person’s posture, you are not only gaining<br />

rapport but are actually able to get a feel for his or her<br />

frame <strong>of</strong> mind.<br />

In his book On Becoming a Person: A <strong>The</strong>rapist’s View <strong>of</strong><br />

Psychotherapy, psychologist Carl Rogers wrote, “Real communic<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

occurs when we listen with underst<strong>and</strong>ing—to see<br />

the idea <strong>and</strong> <strong>at</strong>titude from the other person’s point <strong>of</strong> view,<br />

to sense how it feels to them, to achieve their frame <strong>of</strong> reference<br />

in regard to the thing they are talking about.”<br />

Reaching th<strong>at</strong> goal <strong>of</strong> real communic<strong>at</strong>ion—<strong>of</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing,<br />

<strong>of</strong> emp<strong>at</strong>hy—is why nonverbal literacy is so crucial to<br />

our pr<strong>of</strong>essional success.<br />

For leaders those communic<strong>at</strong>ion skills can play a key<br />

role in making sure th<strong>at</strong> the workforce truly receives <strong>and</strong><br />

underst<strong>and</strong>s the messages they wish to send. Consider the<br />

case <strong>of</strong> one Fortune 25 company, where “town hall meetings”<br />

provided an ongoing opportunity for small groups <strong>of</strong>
