<strong>The</strong> most important factor in many potential legal cases,<br />

besides the injury itself, is the quality <strong>of</strong> the doctor/p<strong>at</strong>ient<br />

rel<strong>at</strong>ionship. And a big part <strong>of</strong> th<strong>at</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ionship depends on<br />

nonverbal communic<strong>at</strong>ion. One study found th<strong>at</strong> gre<strong>at</strong>er<br />

than 50 percent <strong>of</strong> 263 p<strong>at</strong>ients who sued their doctor claimed<br />

they were so turned <strong>of</strong>f by the doctor th<strong>at</strong> they wanted to sue<br />

him or her before the alleged event occurred!<br />

<strong>The</strong> Ralph I referred to earlier was not a doctor. But if you<br />

are like Ralph <strong>and</strong> think th<strong>at</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ionships with customers<br />

really don’t m<strong>at</strong>ter in your business, I’d ask you to reconsider.<br />

I don’t know <strong>of</strong> any pr<strong>of</strong>ession—from healthcare to high<br />

tech—where customer rel<strong>at</strong>ionships <strong>and</strong> body language are<br />

not a crucial part <strong>of</strong> business success.<br />

Regardless <strong>of</strong> the industry you work in, there are some basic<br />

principles th<strong>at</strong> apply to any pr<strong>of</strong>ession. Look <strong>at</strong> the following
