114 <strong>The</strong> <strong>Nonverbal</strong> <strong>Advantage</strong><br />

St<strong>and</strong>ing Positions<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are six main st<strong>and</strong>ing positions, <strong>and</strong> each one tells you<br />

something about the <strong>at</strong>titude <strong>of</strong> the person assuming th<strong>at</strong><br />

position.<br />

St<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>at</strong> <strong>at</strong>tention Junior <strong>of</strong>ficers addressing<br />

senior <strong>of</strong>ficers or employees talking to the<br />

boss most <strong>of</strong>ten assume this respectful, legstogether<br />

stance.<br />

St<strong>and</strong>ing with legs apart Like the se<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

legs-apart position, st<strong>and</strong>ing with legs apart <strong>and</strong><br />

feet firmly planted on the ground is a predominantly<br />

male gesture (the western gunslinger<br />

pose) th<strong>at</strong> signals dominance or determin<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

Putting h<strong>and</strong>s on the hips or folding the<br />

arms while in this stance is a masculine gesture<br />

<strong>of</strong> power th<strong>at</strong> also communic<strong>at</strong>es coldness <strong>and</strong><br />

inapproachability.<br />

St<strong>and</strong>ing with weight evenly distributed<br />

When people are comfortable, they usually balance<br />

their weight on both feet. <strong>The</strong> language th<strong>at</strong><br />

instinctively reflects this posture/<strong>at</strong>titude connection<br />

is “well balanced,” “take a firm st<strong>and</strong>,”<br />

<strong>and</strong> “knowing where you st<strong>and</strong> on this.”
