Head shifts When people are uttering or listening to a<br />

message th<strong>at</strong> makes them uncomfortable, their heads may<br />

shift away from whomever they are talking to. This is an<br />

<strong>at</strong>tempt to cre<strong>at</strong>e distance. W<strong>at</strong>ch for an abrupt jerking back<br />

<strong>of</strong> the head or a slow deliber<strong>at</strong>e withdrawal. Both are signs <strong>of</strong><br />

discomfort.<br />

Head duck “Look out below!” <strong>The</strong> posture you’d instinctively<br />

assume in reaction to this cry is to raise your shoulders<br />

<strong>and</strong> pull your head down between them. It’s the same posture<br />

I’ve seen many employees take as they approach their boss.<br />

He’s insecure, <strong>and</strong> she’s the boss.<br />

In a business context, the head duck is a signal th<strong>at</strong> <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

reveals the st<strong>at</strong>us <strong>and</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ionship between individuals.<br />

Head held high Many years ago an experiment was conducted<br />

with a group <strong>of</strong> students who smoked cigarettes. After<br />

the results <strong>of</strong> an exam were given out, the students were<br />

observed to see if they had passed or failed the test. Those<br />

students who had done well exhaled their cigarette smoke<br />

upward, while those who had performed poorly exhaled<br />

downward. It’s all about head position. Feelings <strong>of</strong> high
