Purple 3 1 2 3 4 5 Cloud spotting Clouds form in the sky. Tiny water droplets join together to make a cloud. When the water droplets get too heavy, it rains, hails or snows. There are three main types of clouds—‘cirrus’, ‘cumulus’ and ‘stratus’. Cirrus clouds form high in the sky. The word ‘cirrus’ means ‘tuft’ or ‘curl of hair’. These clouds look like white, wispy curls of hair and are made of thin ice crystals. Cumulus clouds are big and fluffy. The word ‘cumulus’ means ‘a heap’ or ‘pile’. They can be white and look like cotton balls, or grey, which means it may rain. Cumulus clouds form when warm, moist air is forced upward. As the air rises, it cools and makes clouds. ©R.I.C. Stratus clouds form when a layer of warm, moist air passes over a layer of cool air. They can be white or grey.
