Lime 9 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Hiccup! Hiccup! Hiccup! Hiccup! Hic! Hic! Excuse me! I know we say ‘Excuse me!’ when we hiccup. But why do we hiccup? Put your hands at the bottom of your chest. Take a deep breath in and then out. You will feel a muscle moving as you breathe in and out. It is called the diaphragm (die-a-fram). Usually the diaphragm works as it should do. It helps to pull air into our lungs and push air out of them again. It moves smoothly. Sometimes, something happens and the diaphragm does not move so smoothly. It moves in a jerky way. The air we breathe out makes a hiccup sound. This usually happens because we have eaten something too quickly or eaten something rich. Hiccups nearly always last just a few minutes. However, some people have been known to have them for a few days, a few weeks or even years! There are several things people do to try to get rid of their hiccups. Some people drink sips of water while holding their breath. Others take deep breaths in and out of a paper bag. ©R.I.C.
