Lime 1 The legend of Black Bart 1 2 3 4 A long time ago, John Roberts was born in Wales. As an adult, he started work as a sailor on a slave ship. When his ship was attacked by pirates, he was captured and forced to work with them. After the death of the captain, John Roberts was elected commander of the ship. Black Bart, the pirate, had begun his pirate career. Black Bart became a very successful pirate. He captured over four hundred ships and stole over one hundred million dollars worth of loot. He caught and hanged one of his enemies. Black Bart made a lot of money selling slaves. ©R.I.C. Publications Low Resolution Images Display Copy Following a fight between his ship and the warship HMS Swallow, Black Bart was killed by cannon fire. His crew threw his body overboard as was his wish. His career as a pirate was over, after less than three years. 5 6 Black Bart was also famous for his unusual ways. He drank a lot of tea, instead of rum. He encouraged his crew to pray and he did not like them to get drunk or gamble. He was also well-known for his habit of wearing gentlemen’s clothing. His favourite outfit was a bright red waistcoat and trousers, a hat with a red feather and a diamond cross on a gold chain around his neck. R.I.C.
