So what makes popcorn explode? The secret to popcorn’s pop is ... water! There is some water inside a kernel of popcorn. On the outside of each kernel is a hard shell. When the kernel gets very hot, the water inside starts to turn into steam. The steam can’t get out because of the hard shell. The steam pushes on the hard shell until … POP! The hard shell explodes!
