Forest secret
I used to dread our visits to Nan’s place. It’s not that I don’t
like Nan, it’s just that she lives in the middle of nowhere! It
takes a few days to drive there and we usually stay about
a week. There are no shops, no cinemas and not even
any proper roads. All my sister, Gabby, and I can do is
read, argue or go for walks in the forest.
One cool, foggy morning, that’s just what Gabby and I
did—we went walking in the forest. Normally, we didn’t go
too far. But that day we did. We kept walking until Gabby
disappeared right in front of me! One minute she was in front
of me and the next she was gone! I froze in fright.
‘Gabby?’ I called. ‘Where are you? GABBY!’
‘I’m down here’, came a faint voice. I quickly ran up to where
she had been. I nearly fell down a black and dusty hole.
‘Gabby? Are you OK?’ I asked, peering into the hole.
‘I’m fine. There’s something down here. Something big.’
‘What kind of something?’ I asked. ‘A UFO? A dinosaur? A bomb?’
‘Something metal. It’s huge. I’ll try and see what it is … Wow! I think it’s a
plane’, she said. ‘A really old one. But it is still intact.’

As my eyes got used to the dark, I could see she was right. There was a
small, dark green plane, covered in dirt and dust. ‘There’s a something
painted on the side there ... it’s a big red circle with a white rim. Hey! I
think it’s a Japanese warplane!’
It turned out we were right. I helped Gabby out of the hole and we
raced back to Nan’s. Nan rang the army, and the next day the place
was full of soldiers and people from the museum.
The Japanese fighter plane was very rare. People came from near and
far to see it! Now there’s cafes and souvenir shops everywhere. Nan’s
place isn’t quite so boring anymore!
