Brown 3 1 2 3 4 5 6 The oxygen cycle Most people know about the water cycle. The sun heats up the water in rivers and oceans. The water changes to water vapour. When the water vapour gets cold it changes back to water. This water stays in the sky as clouds. This cycle is about oxygen and carbon dioxide. These are two of the gases in the air. They are breathed in and out by animals and plants. Animals breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. Plants do the opposite. They breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. What great partners animals and plants make! Plants don’t have brains but they are very clever! They don’t need any other living thing for food because they can make their own. Plants make their food using water, carbon dioxide and energy from the sun. This is called photosynthesis. Without these things, plants cannot grow. During photosynthesis, plants breathe out oxygen. Animals breathe in oxygen from the air. They need it to change food into energy.
