Purple 4 1 2 3 4 5 6 Cows have one large stomach, but it has four separate parts. Animals with four parts in their stomach are called ruminants. Other ruminants are giraffes, deer, sheep and goats. Ruminants eat fast and store large amounts of grass or foliage in their stomachs. The first part, called the rumen, stores and softens food. This is where ‘cud’ comes from. Cud is food that cows swallow, partly digest, bring up and chew again. Cows may chew their cud for up to eight hours a day. Cows sometimes accidentally swallow bits of fences and metal. The second, and smallest, part of the stomach collects these materials. This prevents the cow from getting hurt. It is called the reticulum. ©R.I.C. Cows drink about a bathtub full of water each day. The fourth part is like a human stomach. This is where the final stage of digestion occurs. It is called the abomasum.
