Brown 9 1 2 3 4 5 6 Bees are flying insects that are related to ants and wasps. There are thousands of different bees in the world. The smallest bee is as tiny as a speck of dust, but the biggest could be as large as your little finger! The most well-known bee is the honey bee. A colony of bees usually has one large queen. Her job is to lay eggs. Other female bees are called workers. They collect pollen and look after the queen. The pollen is used to feed the bees. The male bees are called drones. Their job is to breed with the queen bee. The body of a bee has three main parts. The mouth, eyes and antennae are on the head. The wings and three pairs of legs are attached to the thorax. The sting is at the tip of the abdomen. ©R.I.C. Publications Low Resolution Images Display Copy One very important job of a bee is to pollinate flowers. This means to take pollen from one flower and put it on to another flower so that seeds can be made. Bees and other flying insects do this job very well. When a bee visits flowers to drink the rich, sweet nectar, pollen sticks to its fuzzy coat. It is also collected in special sacs on the bee’s legs. The bee drinks nectar through its long tongue, which is called a proboscis. A honey bee has two stomachs. The second one is called the honey stomach. This holds the nectar collected by the bees.
