Grey 10 A river walk 1 2 3 4 5 6 If you could take a long walk along the bank of a river from where it begins to where it flows into the sea, you would see just how much it changes. Every river has a source, which is the place where it begins. At its source, it is small and moves quickly, rushing over small rocks and bubbling through little stones. You may not even realise that it is the start of a river as you would be able to walk over it in one step. As it moves along, the river grows wider and you may need stepping stones to cross it. Further on, it is even wider and it flows more slowly. It is also deeper and can have strong currents. These can be dangerous so always be careful when playing near a riverbank. You wouldn’t want to slip and fall in! ©R.I.C. Publications Low Resolution Images Display Copy Parts of a river can be so wide that long bridges are needed. They carry people, cars, trains and other vehicles from one side of the river to the other. Your walk along the river may take you through beautiful countryside and interesting towns. Unfortunately, you may also see ugly places where there are lots of factories and dirty smoke rising into the sky. You would see lots of people using the river for work and for fun. Some say a river is like a person. When it is young, it is small and active. As it gets older and moves towards its end, it flows more slowly—just like people do! R.I.C.
