The tortoise who talked too much
Long ago in India, there lived three
friends—a tortoise and two geese. The
tortoise lived in a pond where his two
friends often visited.
A drought began to affect the
land and all the waterways
began to dry up—including the
pond where the tortoise lived. The
animals had very little to drink. Some
animals died.
The three friends decided to leave
the pond area and travel to a distant
lake where there was plenty of water.
Although it was easy for the geese to
fly a great distance, it was very difficult
for the tortoise, who could only trudge
along very slowly. They finally thought
of a plan.
The geese would fly holding a strong stick in their beaks. The tortoise
would grasp the stick in his mouth. However, the tortoise would not be
able to speak at all because if he opened his mouth, he would plunge
to the land below and almost certainly die. The tortoise agreed to the
plan but the geese were still concerned about their friend, as he was
very talkative.

The geese warned the tortoise again about talking and they set out
on their journey. They soared high into the sky with the tortoise clinging
tightly to the stick.
Eventually, they flew over a town. The townsfolk saw the tortoise being
transported by the geese and began to laugh and clap. The tortoise,
annoyed at being made fun of, opened his mouth to speak.
As soon as he opened his mouth, the tortoise lost his grip on the stick
and fell to his death. The geese were very sad to have lost a friend who
did not listen to their warning.
