When Caleb and his dad had left home to spend the weekend climbing Mount Reid, it had been a beautifully still spring day. They had both felt great as they walked along munching muesli bars. They hardly noticed the heavy packs they carried on their backs. Their plan was to spend the night in the climbers’ hut near the top, where there were no phones and no people. They would climb up to the summit in the morning before making their way back down again. During the afternoon, it became quite dark and the wind was stronger and very cold. They put on extra clothes and trudged on. It was getting harder and harder to move against the wind. Then the rain started and it stopped being fun. ©R.I.C. Publications Low Resolution Images Display Copy The ground was wet and very slippery. Dad slid across some rocks, twisted his foot and fell. He just sat there, holding his leg and moaning. Caleb realised Dad couldn’t get up to the hut or get back down again. It was dark and they were both cold, wet and miserable. This just shouldn’t be happening at this time of year. What could he do? He couldn’t leave his dad and if he did, he might get lost. All he could do was try to keep Dad as warm, dry and comfortable as he could. He dragged open their packs.
