Orange 8 1 2 3 Quicksand Maybe you have seen films or read stories about people stepping into quicksand. They get ‘sucked’ down and can’t get out. Is quicksand real? If so, how does it work? Quicksand is real! It can be found in many places, usually near riverbanks or beaches and on the shores of lakes. DANGER QUICKSAND Quicksand is a mix of sand, water, clay and salt. It looks like hard ground but it is more like jelly! Light things, like leaves, can stay on the top of it. But as soon as something heavy moves onto it, the clay starts to get ‘runny’. The heavy thing then starts to sink. If the heavy thing moves fast, the quicksand gets runnier. Then it sinks even faster! 4 Quicksand is usually not very deep, but it can be quite hard to get out of. The best way of getting out is to move your arms and legs slowly.
