Purple 6 1 2 3 4 5 A natural satellite is a body in space which moves around a planet. The moon is our closest neighbour in space. It is the Earth’s only natural satellite. In 1969, astronauts landed on the moon. It was the first time that people had been to the moon. When Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon, he said, ‘That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind’. On Earth, we always see the same side of the moon. If you look carefully, you can see light and dark parts. The higher, lighter areas have many craters. ©R.I.C. Publications Low Resolution Images Display Copy The moon has no atmosphere to protect it. This allows asteroids, comets and meteorites to crash onto its surface and make craters. There is no air on the moon. Soundwaves need air to travel, so the moon is a silent place. The moon doesn’t belong to anyone. An agreement among the countries on Earth protects the moon. It says the moon can only be explored for peaceful activities. R.I.C.
