It’s hard to imagine, but there really is a famous city that has no cars! Venice is a beautiful, very old city in Italy. It is made up of over one hundred islands that are separated by waterways called canals. There are no roads on the islands. It is possible to spend all day walking around the city without worrying about traffic. The most famous bridge in Venice is the Rialto. It is over four hundred years old. 4 5 If you are ever lucky enough to be a visitor to Venice, you must take a ride along the canals on a long, thin boat called a gondola. A gondolier uses a long pole to steer it through the water. Everyone uses the canals in Venice. Even the police, fire service and ambulances have special boats instead of cars. R.I.C.
