Gold 2 1 2 3 4 Amazing animals Did you know that some animals are able to regenerate? That means if they lose a body part, such as a leg, they can grow a new one. Lizards can lose their tail and leave it wiggling on the ground to distract their enemy while they escape. It takes around nine months for a new tail to grow. If flatworms and sea cucumbers are cut into pieces, each piece grows into a whole new flatworm or sea cucumber. Spiders and sea stars are able to regrow missing legs or arms. A few amazing frogs are able to freeze themselves over the winter and thaw out once spring arrives. The North American wood frog freezes itself at the very first touch of ice. It begins by freezing its organs. As soon as the temperature rises in spring, the frog thaws from the inside and begins moving around within a few hours. ©R.I.C. Publications Low Resolution Images Display Copy Have you ever thought about an animal ejecting its stomach? A sea cucumber gets rid of its stomach when it feels threatened. It takes a few weeks for its stomach to regrow. A sea star ejects its stomach to collect food. When it is finished eating, the stomach is sucked back inside its body. Some frogs eject their whole stomach when they vomit. They clean it with their leg and then take it back inside their body! How about zebras—did you know that each zebra has its own unique stripe pattern, just like our fingerprints are unique to each of us? Zebras use their stripes to recognise each other within the herd.
