Crazy Horse

Crazy Horse was a very famous leader of the
Lakota Indians in the USA.
When he was a boy his name was Curly Hair.
At 18 years of age, he was given his father’s
name of Crazy Horse because he was such a
brave warrior. His father was then called Worm.
Crazy Horse wanted his people, who lived in South
Dakota, to keep their way of life and their lands.
When the USA government ordered his people to
move onto an Indian reservation, they refused
to go. Crazy Horse became their leader and
gathered 1200 warriors. They won many fights
against the soldiers. Later, Crazy Horse joined
forces with Chief Sitting Bull. They defeated and
killed General Custer and all his 200 men at the
famous Battle of the Little Bighorn.
After this terrible battle, the other Indian chiefs
fled to Canada, but Crazy Horse stayed and
continued to fight. About a year later, he
had to surrender because the soldiers kept attacking them and there
weren’t enough buffalo left to hunt for food.

Although he was famous, there are few photos of Crazy Horse. This was
because he refused to be photographed. He believed capturing his
image would mean certain death.

Crazy Horse died when he was only 31. He was arrested because
he left the reservation without permission to take his sick wife to her
parents. He began to struggle and while he was being held, a soldier
stabbed him.
Today, a huge rock carving of Crazy Horse and his horse is being
created on a mountain in South Dakota. It won’t be finished for many
years.
