Bells, Dick Whittington and his cat 1 2 3 4 5 A long time ago, there was an orphan named Dick Whittington. Purple 9 Dick decided to go to the city of London to make his fortune. Tired, cold and hungry, he fell asleep on the steps of the house of a rich merchant named Mr Fitzwarren. Kind Mr Fitzwarren gave him a job in the kitchen. One day, Dick bought a cat for a penny. The cat chased away the mice in Dick’s tiny room so he was happy. Mr Fitzwarren was getting ready to send one of his ships to a land far away. Any servant could send something of value to be traded for gold. Dick sadly sent his cat. ©R.I.C. Publications Low Resolution Images Display Copy The cook was very mean to Dick so he ran away. When he reached the end of the city, he heard the Bow Bells ringing out, ‘Turn again, Whittington, three times Lord Mayor of London!’ Dick was amazed, but he decided to go back to work in Mr Fitzwarren’s house. 6 Eventually, the ship returned. Dick discovered that his cat had been sold to a king for a lot of money. His palace was overrun with mice. So Dick became a rich man. He started working with Mr Fitzwarren in his business.
