Part human, part animal Lemon 5 3 4 1 2 The Minotaur was a fierce and aggressive creature in Greek myths. There was only one Minotaur. It had the head and tail of a bull and the body of a man. When it was captured, the Minotaur was locked in a big maze from which escape was said to be impossible. The Minotaur was given seven young men and seven young women every nine years. It killed and ate them one by one. Finally, a hero called Theseus killed it while it slept. The Sphinx was part of Greek and Egyptian myths. It had the body of a lion and the head of a human. The Sphinx was a creature of destruction and bad luck. In one myth, a winged Sphinx would ask people a riddle: ‘What animal goes on four feet in the morning, on two at noon, and in the evening upon three?’ The answer was a human, who in childhood crawls on hands and knees, in adulthood walks, and in old age needs a walking stick. Any person who couldn’t give the right answer would be killed and eaten. Strange creatures can be found in many myths from around the world. Some of the strangest of these were part human and part animal. Centaurs in Greek mythology were part human and part horse. They had the legs and body of a horse. Where the horse’s neck and head should have been there was a human waist, chest, head and arms. The centaurs were wild, strong creatures. Only the leader of the centaurs, Chiron, was wise and gentle.
