Rainbows in the sky
The light we get from the sun is not just white. It is made up of many
different colours. We can see them each time we look up at a rainbow
in the sky.
A rainbow is an arc of these different colours. It appears in the sky on a
rainy day when the sun bursts through the clouds.
A rainbow is formed when the sun shines through the raindrops in the
rain clouds. As it passes through the raindrops, the white sunlight is split
into the colours red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo (deep blue)
and violet (purple).
If you shine the light from a torch through
a glass prism, the prism acts in the
same way as a raindrop. It also splits the
torchlight into the colours of the rainbow.
Next time you look at a rainbow, notice
where the sun is. You will find that you
can only see a rainbow in the sky when
the sun is behind you.

The colours of the rainbow are always in the same order. The red is on
the outside of the arc and the violet is on the inside.
Sometimes, a second, faint rainbow can be seen in the sky. The colours
of this rainbow are reversed with red on the inside and violet on the
outside.
Have you heard the old story that says if you go to the end of a
rainbow and dig there, you will find a pot of buried gold?
